My Role as a Student of Human Resources

Image
4.bp.blogspot.com             I have spent the last few years studying human resources. It has been quite a journey. I have had the opportunity to be challenged and learn about the different aspects of human resources.             One of my favorite subjects is organizational theory which is the study of how different personalities, cultures, and beliefs affect the interpersonal relationships and decisions of an organization. Basically, all organizations are made up of the Elites or upper management, Middles or middle management, and Immigrants or employees.             I loved learning about the actions that we tend to make as employees navigate to the perceived roles that they have within an organization. According to Barry Oshry, the biggest issue is “tearing” when the Middles are torn with between understandi...

Gamification: Making Training A Game

We all have experienced various forms of training that has ranged from downright boring to exciting. Businesses use strategic planning to determine how to better use its physical capital (plants, technology, and equipment), financial capital (assets and cash reserves), and human capital (employees). The ultimate goal is to maximize shareholder wealth; in addition to focusing on employee satisfaction and engagement, their industry position, and social responsibility to the community. (Noe, 2013) I reviewed Sharlyn Lauby’s, "the HR bartender" and HR pro turned consultant, article Creating Strategy and Being Strategic Aren’t the Same Thing and she discussed the difference between thinking strategically and creating a strategy. I would not have thought of the two as separate concepts, yet her distinction makes sense and is easy to understand. Sharlyn notes that there are a variety of business strategies; such as, marketing strategies, compensation strategies, re...

The Need for an Assessment

Image
http://glwach.amedd.army.mil/feedback/default.asp What do you think when you hear an organization wants to conduct a needs assessment? When deciding to conduct a needs assessment an organization or human resource specialist must ask: 1) what is the purpose of the assessment, 2) who is being observed, 3) how is the data collected, and 4) what feedback will be provided? Raymond A. Noe believes that organizations can use several methods when conducting a needs assessment. They include observation, questionnaires, interviews, surveys, focus groups, or online technology.  The needs assessment should be conducted as an organizational analysis, task analysis, and personal analysis.  Organizational analysis looks at the effectiveness of the organization and determines where training is needed and under what conditions it will be conducted. A task analysis identifies the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics needed to achieve optimum performance for a group of...
