My Role as a Student of Human Resources

I have spent the last few years studying human resources. It has been quite a journey. I have had the opportunity to be challenged and learn about the different aspects of human resources.

One of my favorite subjects is organizational theory which is the study of how different personalities, cultures, and beliefs affect the interpersonal relationships and decisions of an organization. Basically, all organizations are made up of the Elites or upper management, Middles or middle management, and Immigrants or employees.

I loved learning about the actions that we tend to make as employees navigate to the perceived roles that they have within an organization. According to Barry Oshry, the biggest issue is “tearing” when the Middles are torn with between understanding the issues of the Immigrants and enforcing the rules of the Elites. Those perceived roles can be overwhelming and cause harmony or discord and effect the overall productivity of an organization.

I also enjoyed learning about performance management which is the how organizations provide different interventions or solutions to improve the behavior or performance of its employees. Performance improvement practitioners or specialists are tasked with examining the strategic alignment of an organization using a performance analysis which involves an organizational analysis, environmental analysis, gap analysis, and cause analysis.

There can be many or a few factors that can cause an organization to not operate efficiently as it did in the past. Organizations may want to implement an intervention before actually knowing or diagnosing what the root of the issues are in reality, and this can cause more issues and continue to effect the strategic alignment.

There are many facets of an organization and it is interwoven between the Elites, Middles, and Immigrants and that is where human resources comes into play to help facilitate the relationships within the organization.

I love studying and learning about human resources and look forward to the opportunity of working with an organization that believes in the importance of human resources and its significance to the organization. I look forward to establishing working relationships with the new and current employees and enhance their understanding that my goal is to help them improve their performance and find their best role within the organization.

  2. I really liked what you said about Middles being torn between Elites and Immigrants. I had not heard about this concept before, and it is so very true. I am one of the Middles myself, and it is especially difficult in the HR setting, because I truly understand the issues that many of our Immigrants face, but I also must abide by policies set forth by our Elites, and sometimes the end result is giving bad news to our Immigrants. Its never fun, but I know at the end of the day the policies are their for a reason, and its my job to enforce them in HR.

I wish you the best of luck going forward - I see great potential in you to work in HR someday! Oh, and I love Dilbert - way to throw him in there . . .
